The Hearst Castle , San Siemon California (Pacific Highway)
Starting in 1865, George Hearst purchased 40,000 for his ranch. His son, William Randolph Hearst, Publishing Tycoon inherited the ranch and bought additional land ebringing the total land to around 250,000 acres. Building of his retreat named "La Cuesta Ensantada/Spanish for Enhcanted Hill"was started in 1919 and finished in 1947. Construction was under the supervision Of his young Architect/love interest Julia Morga.n the residence became known as the Hearst Castle. The estate consists of 165 rooms on 123 acres of beautiful scupltured gardens - with Terraces, pools and walkways all built to Hearst's Specifications. The Caste; is open daily for public viewing. There are 4 different tours that comer different parts of the castle area that take 4-5 hours each so Plan to stay in the are a couple days. The tour are well worth the stay You're guided give very unbelivable storys and you leave in AW of this property. I visited in 2000 and willl never forget a single detail. Facts -Juila had a seperate bedroom From Randolph's to make everything "above board"The tour revievled the "closet" which was a walkway between the 2 rooms..Hummm? One of the amazing facts, he had the fiist Airstrip on private property for daily deliveriesmof copies of all his news papers daily. he demanded to "proof" and "Markup"/Review and mak corrections/changings on EVERYDAY for EVERY Newspaper he Owned. He would recieve then go over and send back out to the Plane(s) to return to the Newspapers for printing? Since I have a Newspaper backgroung this was a real "Shock & AWW" fot me.

Oceanside California -- Camp Pendelton

My son Kenneth Shell, career Navy son was stationed at Camp Pendelton in Oceanside, California for awhile. Was able to visit him on my trip and was really interesting.. Swift Intruders was his group and here was his jobsite. He was crew for these Hover Craft ( LAC /Land Assullt Carrier). They glide across the water with a huge air cushion that is not visiable in the pictures. The pictures vessels are in the only graveyard in the Navy. The fer first unit(Unit Serial Number 1) is retired here in Oceanside. What a experience! Thanks so too my son Kenneth James Shell -- Retired USN after 20 years of service to our country and continuing his service working for the Navy here in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Logistics Naval facility at CCNaval Air Station for the last 10 years.
